Here's a web site dedicated to a current Advance Life Support (paramedic) issue in the greater Montgomery area. From what I've been reading it isn't just that area that is affected. It involves not dispatching the quickest available ALS unit to an emergency. lycoemsgonewrong.webs.com/

Wouldn't you think common sense should prevail when dispatching EMS units?

Unfortunately Larry emergency responses aren't based on common sense or closest available, they are based on imaginary lines on a political map for Police, fire and EMS. The municipal government is responsible for determining who responds, and for fire and ems most often defer to the Fire Chief of their municipality to do it for them. In my honest opinion this is an antiquated way to do things. Technology being what it is, the closest available units ought to be dispatched to an emergency regardless of municipal boundaries.
